BATALA AUSTRALIA

Batala Australia is a Byron Bay-based Afro-Brazilian percussion group that plays traditional Samba-reggae rhythms. In 2016 Flávia Lopes, inspired by her experience of being a part of Batala Brasilia back in Brazil, decided to bring the beats to Australia. Together with a diverse group of local women, and with Priscila Rios as the music leader, the community project was founded.

‘Our mission is to enrich and inspire our communities by providing Afro-Brazilian musical and cultural experiences, through workshops and live performances. As an artistic collective, our musical expression and cultural heritage are open to all individuals regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age or background, adding to our mission the promotion of social inclusion. We believe that music is a universal language that can inspire and have a positive influence on the broader community.’

BATALA MUNDO

Batala is an international Samba Reggae music project. Batala comes from ‘Bate-lá’ meaning ‘hit there’ and Obatalá - the Father of the whole of humanity - which is a deity from Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion.

Mestre Giba Gonçalves, who was born in Bahia-Brazil, was one of the founders of the percussive group 'Cortejo Afro', which among others, reinstated the pride of African heritage and reaffirmed values and aspects of the black culture in Brazil. In 1997 when Giba was living in Paris, he created Batala as an international extension of ‘Cortejo Afro’, welcoming anyone interested in learning Samba Reggae. Nowadays, there are 46 groups spread in 17 different countries worldwide

SAMBA REGGAE

Originating in Bahia Brazil in the 1970's, as its name suggests, this rhythm is a fusion of Brazilian Samba and Jamaican Reggae, mixed with Dominican Merengue rhythms.

Neguinho do Samba was the precursor to the Samba Reggae beats and spread it all over Brazil, representing the afro-Brazilian black movement and its resistant or activist street culture. The beginning of international recognition started in 1990, when Paul Simon recorded the song “Obvious Child” song. Then, in 1995, Michael Jackson recorded "They don´t care about us“. Both invited Olodum, the most well-known Samba Reggae group worldwide, featuring the Samba Reggae rhythm as the percussion base of their songs.

The traditional Samba Reggae orchestra is composed of the following instruments: Surdos (bass drums) - Caixa (snare drum) - Repinique (high tuned drum).
